The Heaven Shop by Deborah Ellis
I loved the book 'The Heaven Shop', because it was really touching and it was relevant to what we were learning-to understand how poor people live in cycle of poverty.
The Paper Bag Game
I'm looking forward to it very much, and it will be very fun. But we haven't came up with a good strategy to survive.
Global Issues
This course is very fun, because we play a lot of games, and we take a lot of action. We also learn about things happening around the world. It's a great course. Now I know why it was replaced with drama.

Ayity-Cost of Life
Haiti is one of the countries that has so many shock factors and natural disasters. For example, they have storms every month, and a few months ago, there was a massive earthquake. Haiti is now trying to recover from the earthquake as fast as possible. Also, the media is getting envolved, feeling pity for them. The media and other indivisuals are taking action to help Haiti to recover. But the problems are, that there are too much difficulties faced by this country, trying to recover. One, is the environment. Haiti is very mountainous, and the soils were already gone when they cut down the trees, trying to develop. Also, it had been through slavery in 17th century under France. In the 19th century, there was war going on. They were in control for 29 years under dectatorship, and there are a lot of violence factors. Haiti also is affected by all the disaster except droughts, including floods, storms and earthquakes. The people in Haiti has very low literacy, only 1% of the Haitian people own all the wealth, and everyone live bundled up together in an ad hoc camp, because they are homeless. There are people living this country(brain drain) because the salaries are higher in other countries, and deadly disease such as Diptheria and Diarrhea exist, because there aren't enough medicine to cure people. Living with so much disadvantages like these, Haiti just can't seem to develop. This also reminds me of the cycle of poverty. The parents are unschooled, they can't earn much money, so kids drop out of school, which leads to lack of education, and then goes to kids working also, and they get unhappy, and unhealthy. End of the life.

3rd World Farmer
Global Issues Portfolio Reflection
3rd World Farmer Reflection
The purpose of the game was to put ourselves in the farmers’ shoes, and feel how their life depends on shock factors. My strategy was to plant different crops at a time to avoid losing one kind of crops. A short-term decision is making decision that will be good to you for just for a short time. For example, in 3rd World Farmer, I was short of money, so I let some people put toxic waste on our farm just to get some money. It is bad because after that short time that will be good, you’ll be put in a more bad situation than you are in now. They are too short on money that they have to make short-term decisions. The only way to get out of this cycle, is if wealthy people support them with money. A long-term decision is a decision you make, thinking about the future, if it’s good or bad. And if they are bad, you would decide not to do it. They are good because it will put you in a better situation after a short time. Long term decisions lead to development and increased standards of living. That is because, if you keep making long-term decisions, then you’ll get wealthy, then you can send your children to school, and your children will get educated well to go to a university, than get employed that makes a lot of money. I learnt that very poor people get affected by shock factors each year, and they can’t get out of poverty unless there are helpful touches from others. This also relates to one of our SLR’s, living ethically, because we are putting ourselves in the farmers’ shoes, and make us think about living more ethically. This simulation relates to the MDG number 1, End Poverty and Hunger, because the game is trying to end poverty by inspiring us to help the poors.

I chose this picture, because it clearly shows the cycle of poverty.

Final Blog Response
The challenges faced by farmers in LEDC’s are that they live with so much shock factors that affect them daily. Also, people don’t trade their goods fairly. For example, the manufacturers might buy their crops only for 5$ while they should be getting 10$, because the farmers live in poverty, so they need any amount of money as soon as possible. The barriers to development they face are the shock factors such as droughts, or animal disease, and short-term decisions that traps them in cycle of poverty. Farming and poverty are related to development, because if you farm subsistencially, and you can’t get out of poverty, there are no money left for you to develop.
